Vikings WR Justin Jefferson sets record straight on future of quarterback position with clear, consistent message
The biggest decision for the Minnesota Vikings need to make this offseason is at quarterback. Sam Darnold had a renaissance season this year with 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns along with a Pro Bowl nod for the first time.
The idea to bring back Darnold has been a complicated one for the Vikings. If money wasn’t a concern, bringing him back would be a no-brainer, even with J.J. McCarthy in the building. Why? Darnold played this year how you want McCarthy to play in the future so why give that up?
Justin Jefferson comments on future at QB for Vikings
It’s a decision that will shape the franchise for the next decade and one that star wide receiver Justin Jefferson understands is a tough one. Athlon Sports’ Doug Farrar asked Jefferson about the future at quarterback and he gave his honest thoughts.
“Luckily, that ain’t my decision,” Jefferson said. “I’m sitting back, and I’m waiting for all of these decisions to be made. I’m really just showing up and being myself and making the plays that I make. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what we’re going to do with Sam, if we’re going to bring him back. Of course, J.J. is going to have his opportunity to make some plays and to see if he’s going to be the starter.
“I’m not sure exactly what we’re going to do with Sam and the moves that we’re going to make, but I’m always confident in myself. It don’t matter who’s going to be throwing the ball. I’m going to make a play for sure.”

This is a pretty boilerplate answer from Jefferson. He’s taking the politically correct approach in answering the question. However, Jefferson’s answer is important here, as he’s remained very consistent about how he feels about Minnesota. These comments came right after the 2024 season.
“It’s not really in my control…I’m confident they’re going to make the right decision up there (front office). If it’s Kirk (Cousins), perfect. If it’s whoever they choose, it’s not my decision. I’m always going to continue to just be myself regardless and just play my best ball whenever I’m out there on the field.”
The confidence Jefferson has in the Vikings front office is a great thing and one that fans shouldn’t take for granted.
