Vikings predicted to sign Jets underrated $58 million pending free agent

Vikings predicted to sign Jets underrated $58 million pending free agent

The Minnesota Vikings have multiple areas to address during the 2025 offseason, with the cornerbacks room certainly being among them.

Not only did the Vikings finish with a bottom-five pass defense in 2024, giving up 242 yards per game, Minnesota also has three pending free agents at cornerback in Byron Murphy, Stephon Gilmore and Shaquil Griffin.

While it remains to be seen if the Vikings will bring any of those players back, they can bring in an upgrade in New York Jets pending free-agent cornerback D.J. Reed, who some Vikings fans predict will land in Minnesota in an article done by Vikings Territory.

Signed to a three-year, $33 million deal in free agency in 2022, Reed has become one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the NFL, mostly because he has lived in the shadow of Sauce Gardner.

Over three years in New York, Reed surrendered a completion rate of 60.1% and a passer rating of 83.3. In 2024, the former fifth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers permitted a 57.1% completion rate and a passer rating of 87.1.

So, why would the Jets let him walk? Well, there’s a few reasons, one of which has to do with the fact that Gardner is going to have to be paid big money soon, and the team also signed slot cornerback Michael Carter to a hefty deal.

But Reed has also made it clear he has no intentions of coming back after what was a disastrous three years for the franchise while he was there.

“I’m ready to go to free agency, bro,” Reed told Tyler Dunne of Go Long. “I’m ready to see what’s next for me.”

With Brian Flores having a history of getting the most out of his defenders, there’s reason to believe that Reed could be even better. A pairing of Reed and Murphy (if re-signed) would give the Vikings a very formidable duo to work with.

Per Spotrac, Reed is projected to garner a four-year contract worth $58.6 million, which works out to $14.7 million guaranteed. It’s possible Reed commands even more than that, given the fact that he’s going to be one of the best cornerbacks available.

Regardless, the Vikings are well-positioned to make that work. According to Over the Cap, Minnesota is projected to have $58 million in cap space in 2025.
