Texas County at Center of Border Fight Overwhelmed by Migrant Deaths
Maverick County in Texas is struggling to cope with the devastating consequences of the border crisis. The county located at the center of the border fight, has been overwhelmed by the sheer number of migrant deaths.¹
The situation is dire, with the county’s morgue facilities stretched to the breaking point. The local mortician, Jesus “Chuy” Gonzalez, has been working tirelessly to handle the influx of bodies. The trailer purchased by the county to store COVID-19 victims is now being used to hold the remains of migrants who have lost their lives attempting to cross the border.
The causes of these deaths are varied, but many are attributed to the treacherous conditions of the Rio Grande. The river’s powerful undercurrents and smooth rocks make it difficult for migrants to find a grip, leading to drownings. Additionally, the dam upriver periodically releases water, changing the depth of the river and catching migrants off guard.
The crisis is not limited to Maverick County, as the entire Del Rio sector has seen a significant increase in migrant deaths. Border Patrol agents have reported recovering 15 bodies from the Rio Grande between October 1 and November 20.²
The situation is further complicated by the ongoing debate over immigration policies. Congressional negotiators are currently discussing a potential deal that would provide aid to Ukraine in exchange for stricter asylum policies. The proposed changes would raise the standard for credible fear interviews, making it more difficult for migrants to seek asylum.
As the crisis continues to unfold, it is clear that a comprehensive solution is needed to address the root causes of migration and provide humane treatment to those seeking asylum.
