Steelers could target talented Vikings quarterback to jumpstart their future

Every team is trying to keep their quarterback room at its best in the present and long-term. Pittsburgh is in one of the worst situations in the NFL as they head into the offseason accompanied by only Skylar Thompson as their lone player currently signed to the team. Don’t expect him to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers since he might not even make the roster if they add enough players.

Questions are still floating around if Russell Wilson or Justin Fields present as viable starting options for the team. Right now, neither have re-signed with the club but early indicators seem to be pointing towards Fields as the early betting favorite to be the starter next season. He is younger than Wilson and should be cheaper, so it makes sense for him to be the first choice.

Fields would be a decent bridge quarterback for the Steelers, but they shouldn’t close alternatives.

Mike Tomlin did not rule out external replacements regarding his quarterback spot for the next campaign. All options are on the table and include a potential trade. Free agency has a weak class of quarterbacks, so don’t be shocked if Pittsburgh remains aggressive on the trade front if an unsuspecting player becomes available. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Steelers should attack J.J. McCarthy trade if he becomes available

As things currently sit, it is hard to imagine the Minnesota Vikings moving on from J.J. McCarthy, but it’s not out of the question. They just drafted him this past year with the tenth overall selection. It was a big gamble on the project quarterback, but they heightened the stakes after moving up for him. His rookie season concluded after tearing his meniscus following his first preseason game.

Giving up on a top pick that you traded up to select in the draft would be another bold decision by the Vikings. No one expected Sam Darnold to hold onto the starting job, but after McCarthy was out with an injury, Darnold took off. He led Minnesota to one of the best seasons in franchise history. What happens next will be up to the Vikings and Darnold as he heads for free agency as the top quarterback.

Steelers better hope the Vikings are crazy enough to move on from McCarthy and re-sign Darnold.

Pittsburgh has been begging to find a long-term quarterback. Locating a fix provides gambles that come along with it. Acquiring McCarthy wouldn’t be cheap, but he would have been the top quarterback in the coming draft if he was eligible. He was envisioned as a project coming out of Michigan, and that is something the Steelers are comfortable with.
