Minor dead, woman in hospital after traffic stop ended in crash in Capitol Heights

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Police said that a child died after a crash involving a police officer’s car in Capitol Heights on Friday evening.

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG) said that on Friday around 6:25 p.m., an officer with the District Heights Police Department (DHPD) tried to stop a car in the 6000 block of Marlboro Pike.

The driver stopped before taking off again. The officer lost sight of the car and broadcasted a description via the radio.

The OAG said that another DHPD officer and a Capitol Heights Police Department (CHPD) officer saw the car shortly afterward and tried to stop it on Addison Road South. The car drove away and hit four different vehicles in the 1200 block.

The OAG said that two people who were in one of the cars — a woman and a minor — were taken to the hospital for treatment. The woman had non-life-threatening injuries, but the minor died at the hospital.

Police took the driver of the original car into custody and also took them to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

People in the other cars that were involved stayed at the scene. They only sustained minor injuries.

The OAG’s Independent Investigations Division is leading the investigation into what led to the collision. Anyone with any information is asked to call (410) 576-7070 or email IID@oag.state.md.us.

According to a news release, the IID typically releases names of involved officers within two business days of the incident and body-worn camera footage within 20 days.
