French Skier, 18, Dies in Crash on Slope While Training: ‘A Young and Talented Athlet

The teenager died while training in Val D’isere, France, according to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).

 

In a post on social media, the FIS remembered Simond as “a promising young athlete from the Savoie Ski Committee and the Club des Sports des Saisies.”

 

“Our thoughts are with the French Ski Federation, the Savoie Ski Committee, the Club des Sports des Saisies, and the entire ski community, who are deeply affected by the loss of Margot,” the federation said. “FIS extends its heartfelt condolences to Margot’s family and loved ones and offers its full support in this incredibly difficult time.”

Several top skiers, including U.S. Olympians Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, mourned Simond’s death as well.

 

“Sincere condolences to the family,” Vonn, 40, responded to FIS’s post. Shiffrin, 30, responded with a broken heart and prayer emojis.

Simond was training for a Red Bull Alpine event in France when she crashed during the practice run, BBC reported. A doctor attempted to revive her at the scene but wasn’t able to save the young skier, according to the outlet.

BBC reported the Red Bull Alpine event scheduled for this weekend was cancelled following Simond’s death.

 

The French Olympic Committee remembered Simond as “a promising alpine skiing talent” and “a young and talented athlete,” the outlet also reported.

 

Born in 2007, Simond had been competing internationally since 2023, according to FIS. She had multiple first-place finishes in French National Junior Championships and FIS sanctioned races over the last year, competing in slalom, giant slalom, Super G, and downhill races.
