Fiery Rick Barnes speech helped Tennessee avoid disaster vs. Vandy in Knoxville
If you were ticked off with the way the Tennessee Vols were playing against Vanderbilt on Saturday, trust us when we say you weren’t alone. In awful fashion, UT let Vandy dominate play in the first half, with the Commodores entering halftime up 44-31.
Plain and simple, it was an ugly performance from the players on their home floor and head man Rick Barnes was understandably livid. So much in fact, star point guard Zakai Zeigler revealed that Barnes tore into them inside of the locker room. Good. As it turns out, it lit a fire under the Vols, who came back to post a memorable victory:
“We’re gonna earn our respect right now.”

A passionate speech from Rick Barnes helped the Vols take down Vandy
“Well, you know, we had some mistakes early on in the game,” Zeigler said. “The way we started the game, we can’t do that, especially myself being one of the leaders on the team. Going into the locker room Coach Barnes said some things and I think that lit a little fire under us. Coming out in the second half we knew we had to come out with a different type of energy.”
That’s exactly what Tennessee did, outscoring Vanderbilt 50-32 in the final 20 minutes of play to avoid the season sweep against its in-state rival. Zeiger in particular was brilliant in the second half after not looking like himself in the first.
In alarming fashion, Zeigler didn’t score a single point in the first half, which was wild to see. Things changed after the break in a massive way, though, as the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year poured in 22 points. Boom.
Zeigler of course got some help, with Chaz Lanier chipping in with 21 points. Barnes is quite close with all of his players, but his bond with Zeigler is one of a kind. Despite them being so close, the veteran coach will never let sloppy play slide from his PG or anyone else on the roster. He let them have it with the squad looking so rough over the weekend. It was exactly what the guys needed to wake up and send Vandy back to Nashville with an L.
