Done deal: NRL’s Roosters re-sign An Incredible Origin forwards worth $56M

The State of Origin forwards Spencer Leniu and Connor Watson have re-signed with the Sydney Roosters through 2027, giving them a boost in their quest for the NRL playoffs. After using a racist slur on Ezra Mam during the Roosters’ round one victory against Brisbane in Las Vegas, Leniu was suspended for eight games and had to spend his rookie season in the media. He apologised later. The three-time premiership-winning former Penrith prop made his Origin debut under first-year coach Michael Maguire, participating in all three games of NSW’s series victory.

Usually utilised as an impact player off the bench, Leniu has started to start for Trent Robinson’s team and has averaging 91 run metres per game. The 23-year-old, who last week defeated Parramatta 34–18, scored his maiden try for the Roosters and has since become especially valued for his vicious kick-off returns.

Leniu’s contract was set to expire at the end of the following season, although he was free to start talks with other teams in November before agreeing to a new two-year deal. Robinson remarked, “We’ve loved having Spencer join the Roosters.” “He has the trust and respect of his teammates, and I’m looking forward to watching him continue to build as a player and person over the next few years.” In order to maintain his impressive recovery from the knee injury that kept him out of action for the whole 2023 season, Watson has inked a two-year contract of his own. Despite that extended layoff, the Roosters demonstrated their faith in Watson by giving him a contract offer in November of last year. Since then, they have reaped the benefits, with the utility player returning to his greatest level of play.
