Lake Powell houseboat fire was intentional, investigators say

The National Park Service said on Friday that investigators determined the fire that caused damage to multiple houseboats on Lake Powell, a well-liked vacation spot on the Utah-Arizona border, was an accident. However, the Park Service stated in a statement that the cause of the fire at Wahweap Marina last week is still unknown.

Officials said eyewitness photos and video helped investigators come to their conclusion.

The fire broke out in the early afternoon of June 2 as vacationers were enjoying the lake. It originated on one watercraft before spreading to others.

Online footage and photographs showed black plumes of smoke rising high above the red rock walls that encircle the lake. By early evening, firefighters from several agencies had put out the fire; no other injuries were reported. The Park Service reports that two people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The area around the dock was subsequently closed to the public but has reopened.
