Mattawan woman dies in I-94 crash after Jeep rear-ends stopped semi-truck

A 19-year-old woman died Tuesday night after her driver crashed into the back of semi-truck along I-94, according to Michigan State Police.

The semi-truck had been stopped on the highway near M-51 for a separate crash when the driver of a Jeep Liberty rear-ended the truck, troopers said.

The driver, a 20-year-old Benton Harbor man, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. His passenger, a 19-year-old Mattawan woman, died in the crash, according to state police.

As of Wednesday, it is unknown why the 20-year-old didn’t stop or slow down for backed up traffic, troopers said.

Seatbelts were worn by all involved, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to state police.

Traffic passing through the area was impacted for hours for scene processing and cleanup, troopers said.
