Authorities have identified the two people who died when a car chased by Muscatine police and other agencies collided head-on with another vehicle on Sunday.
Police said in a news release they received multiple reports about shots being fired from a car on Sunday at around 3:15 p.m. It said they located the vehicle but that the woman driving it, refused to yield, so they pursued her out of the city.
Brittany Dale Miles, 36, was involved in the pursuit and was driving a 2021 Nissan Rogue northbound in the southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 218, according to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol.
During the pursuit, Miles struck a 2017 Ford Explorer head-on, according to the crash report. Miles died on impact and the driver of the Ford, identified as Olivia Marie Alvarez, 27, died after life-saving measures were performed.
Miles had several previous traffic violation charges including speeding and reckless driving, according to court records.
In June, Miles allegedly assaulted her mother and took her car without permission.
The state patrol is investigating the fatal crash and another that occurred when a Muscatine officer who was part of the pursuit lost control of his car and crashed near the Cedar River, the release said. The Muscatine officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.
The release said no one was injured by the shots the woman reportedly fired and that the incidents were being investigated.
