TEXAS, ODESSA (AP) – Authorities stated that a woman was hurt when a tiny plane crashed in a neighborhood in West Texas on Tuesday, killing the pilot and one of the passengers and starting a sizable fire on the ground. Authorities said witnesses saw the aircraft struggle to get airborne after it took off from an Odessa airstrip, hit a power wire, and crashed in an alley at around seven in the morning. Both occupants of the aircraft perished. The pilot clearly tried to avoid the residences, according to Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis. He claimed that following the jet crash, there were a few explosions before the massive conflagration on the ground. According to Odessa Fire, some outbuildings in backyards caught fire in addition to a few mobile homes.

The pilot was identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety as 48-year-old Joseph Vincent Summa from Bellaire, a suburb of Houston, and the passenger as 49-year-old Joleen Cavaretta Weatherly from Orange, an east Houston suburb. The aircraft was identified as a Cessna Citation business jet by the Federal Aviation Administration. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will look into it.
