Three people were pronounced dead and two others were in serious condition after a Friday morning crash on Interstate 95, according to Florida Highway Patrol. A 2015 Mercedes sedan being driven by an unidentified 41-year-old man was fleeing from FHP around 8:30 a.m. while heading northbound on I-95 near the King Street exit in Cocoa, according to crash reports. When the driver attempted to take the exit ramp, he collided with two tow trucks that were stopped along the shoulder of the roadway, where a 39-year-old Palm Bay man was in the process of hooking the two vehicles together, FHP said.
When the driver of the Mercedes attempted to take the exit ramp while traveling at a high speed, he collided with both tow trucks, according to the crash report.
Three passengers — a man and two women who have not been identified — were pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver and the man under the tow truck were transported by air to Holmes Regional Medical Center. Currently the driver’s condition is listed as critical while the pedestrian is in serious condition.
Their identities were not immediately released.
Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and no further details were available as of Friday afternoon.
Florida Highway Patrol did not release the events that led up to the driver of the Mercedes fleeing from troopers.
“This is an active criminal traffic homicide investigation. Any charges won’t be made public until the traffic homicide investigation is complete,” wrote FHP spokesperson Trooper Migdalisis Garcia in an email.
