‘Unbelievable’: Oregon man’s dog runs 4 miles for help after car crash

One of the man’s dogs raced four miles to seek rescue after he unintentionally drove off an embankment and camped out at the bottom of a steep valley in Oregon. Last week, while traveling the two-land paved Hells Canyon Scenic Byway through the Wallowa Mountains with his four dogs, Brandon Garrett was unable to “negotiate a curve.” The Baker County Sheriff’s Office released a news release on June 2 stating that Garrett’s car fell off the embankment as a result of that.

Garrett and his brother had been camping, so Blue, one of Garrett’s dogs, ran four miles to get there. According to the sheriff’s office, Blue came to “alert the rest of the party that something was wrong.” Garrett camped out in the woods for the night, a good hundred yards from his vehicle.

The following morning, Garrett’s relatives were able to locate his car, but the difficult terrain prevented them from getting in touch with him. At that point, they dialed 911. We know the following.

On June 3, Garrett’s brother contacted the Baker County Sheriff’s Office early in the morning to report that Garrett had not arrived at camp. He informed them that although they had located Garrett’s vehicle, they could not get in touch. The sheriff’s office was among the agencies who arrived at the crash scene. Garrett and his three other dogs were shortly discovered alive at the crash site by Baker County Sheriff Travis Ash.

As volunteers started using chainsaws to cut a passage to Garrett, Ash provided first aid. According to the sheriff’s office, the search and rescue team then “began the difficult task of reaching Garrett,” loading and securing him in a rescue basket with the help of a highline rope system before pulling him across the chasm. Garrett was transported to a nearby hospital by helicopter. Ashley McClay, a spokesman for the Baker County sheriff’s office, said USA TODAY on Monday that Garrett had left the hospital and was recuperating at home.

Many commenters have applauded Blue and called the dog a “hero.” Garrett’s rescue quickly gained popularity, as many people praised Blue in the post’s comment section on the sheriff’s account of the rescue. Farrah Huff Chastain called it “amazing.” “Somebody get that dog a bone, he saved his person.”

Sharon Foster Bessey referred to Blue’s acts as “unbelievable.” “That dog deserves a medal for that!!!!” she exclaimed. “And then to find everyone alive and rescued, that is a wonderful ending to the story!”
