Siblings, ages 4 and 8, killed after car crashes into child’s birthday party in Monroe Co.

Authorities in Monroe County claimed that a driver who was allegedly drunk struck a building during a child’s birthday celebration on Saturday, killing two siblings, ages 4 and 8. At approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday, crews from multiple agencies were dispatched to the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County. At the scene, fifteen victims, including adults and small children, were attended to by first responders. According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, nine people—six adults and three children—with significant, life-threatening injuries were sent to neighboring hospitals via ambulance or helicopter. The 66-year-old motorist was arrested and accused of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in death. Her current home is the Monroe County Jail. The sheriff claimed that when her car crashed through the wall, it came to a stop 25 feet away.

Her name won’t be made public until following her arraignment. The Monroe County Prosecutors stated on Monday that an April 23 decision will be made on potential additional charges. According to Goodnough, the driver assisted investigators at the site. Processing evidence, speaking with witnesses, and reuniting family members are all ongoing tasks for investigators. According to Goodnough, “the first responders described the scene as extremely chaotic, with high levels of emotion among those who witnessed this horrific incident as well as those directly involved.”

According to the sheriff, investigators think the woman might have visited the neighboring Verna’s Tavern prior to the collision. According to Goodnough, detectives have closed the tavern and are currently carrying out a search warrant to obtain information on how they operated.
