12-year-old girl and 3 other teenagers died, 2 other children injured in 2nd Smith Lake boating accident in as many days

Authorities confirmed Friday night that a watercraft accident on Friday on Smith Lake resulted in the death of a 12-year-old girl and the injuries of two other youngsters. This is the second tragedy on the lake in a short period of time. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency marine patrol troopers were dispatched to the Winston County boating accident that occurred on Friday close to Corinth Boat Ramp on Smith Lake. Sgt. Chad Pate, the assistant commander of ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division for the northern region, reports that at the time of the accident, there were nine individuals on board the 19-foot deck boat, all of whom were residents of Pontotoc County, Mississippi.

In addition to injuring a 14-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, the accident claimed the life of the 12-year-old child. As of Friday night, the collision was still being investigated. It was the second mishap on Smith Lake in a short period of time. Around ten o’clock on Independence Day, there was a two-boat collision in Rock Creek on the lake. Out of the five injured individuals, one had to be transferred for medical assistance. After the crash on Thursday night, one person was still unaccounted for. Multiple agencies assisted in the search efforts, which were halted at one in the morning on Friday and resumed later in the morning.
