Sheriff identifies dead hiker found on Appalachian Trail as man from Schenectady, NY

The hiker who was discovered deceased on September 7 along the Appalachian Trail near Andy Layne has been identified by the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office. On Saturday, Thomas Vanetten, 67, of Schenectady, New York, was discovered deceased. A hiker in Augusta County was saved after plunging from a cliff and into the Saint Mary’s River. The inquiry is still on. The sheriff does not currently suspect foul play, but the body has been transferred to the Office of the Medical Examiner for an official cause of death. On Saturday, September 7, a body was discovered close to the Andy Layne Trail section of the Appalachian Trail. After being called to the area, emergency responders and Botetourt County sheriff’s deputies spotted the person in a section of the trail close to Lambert’s Meadow Shelter. At the scene, it was determined that the person had died. According to the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, no suspicious items were discovered at the location, and no signs of foul play are at this time.

It is unknown what caused the death. The hiker’s identification has not been made public despite the body being transferred to the Office of the Medical Examiner.
