Mining the transfer portal for top talent is essential to stay competitive in college football today. The past three Heisman Trophy winners were transfers, and six of the 12 teams to reach the College Football Playoff this season found their starting quarterback in the portal – that includes Ohio State and Notre Dame, the two teams playing for the national championship. The Buckeyes and Fighting Irish have recruited well historically, and both blue-blood programs supplemented their highly rated incoming freshmen classes with impact players in the portal in 2024. That process may look different from Ohio State to Notre Dame – the Buckeyes plucked stars from SEC schools as they assembled a reported $20 million roster, while some of the Irish additions were lower-profile – they both advanced through the inaugural 12-team CFP to play for the national title on Monday (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN).
