The past three Heisman Trophy winners were transfers, and six of the 12 teams to reach the College Football Playoff this season found their starting quarterback in the portal – that includes Ohio State and Notre Dame, the two teams playing for the national championship. The Buckeyes and Fighting Irish have recruited well historically, and both blue-blood programs supplemented their highly rated incoming freshmen classes with impact players in the portal in 2024. That process may look different from Ohio State to Notre Dame – the Buckeyes plucked stars from SEC schools as they assembled a reported $20 million roster, while some of the Irish additions were lower-profile – they both advanced through the inaugural 12-team CFP to play for the national title on Monday (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN).
