Cape Fear River kayaker found safe after overturning in strong current: ‘Some kind of thankful’

Christopher Monroe, who acknowledges he’s not the best kayaker, was excited to get out on the water with 14 other kayakers and head toward the Erwin Cape Fear River Trail launch. Just after 3 p.m., Monroe said he just sort of lost control of his kayak, which overturned. His group called 911, and units from Erwin Fire and Rescue, Dunn, Lillington, Summerville, Bunnlevel, and Buies Creek all showed up to rescue him. “I was some kind of lucky,

The swift stream prevented his other kayakers from stopping to assist. They continued down the river to their rendezvous place. It seemed to him that he would be in the water forever. A significant portion of his survival can be attributed to the fact that he was wearing a life jacket, even though his story could have ended very differently. The rescue workers had difficulties due to the relatively high water flowing upstream. The water is moving so quickly that even seasoned boaters find it challenging. Make sure you truly grasp the conditions and have the necessary abilities if you intend to go to the river anytime soon. Naturally, also ensure that you’re wearing that live

I simply couldn’t keep the boat under control. I’m not the most graceful or adept kayaker. However, God is good to watch over and shield me. I’m appreciative of it, Monroe added. “You know, I appreciate Erwin Fire and Rescue’s tremendous response, as well as Wildlife and everything else. I’m incredibly grateful for that.
