Red Sox Trade Idea Swap Triston Casas, More for $427 Million Superstar

Now that outfielder Juan Soto signed his $765 million deal, the next young superstar looking to land a huge contract is first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Will the slugger get the deal he’s looking for with the Toronto Blue Jays or a team like the Boston Red Sox?

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Jan. 7 that Guerrero “would love” to join forces with Rafael Devers in Boston. While Toronto would like to hold onto its homegrown slugger, the organization will have to commit to paying him.

Spotrac projects Vlad Jr.’s current market value for a long-term deal at 12 years and $427 million. He’s reportedly looking for at least $450 million, but the team and player are about $100 million apart in negotiations.

If a deal doesn’t get done before spring training and Guerrero enters 2025 with free agency on the horizon, it makes a midseason trade even more of a possibility. FanSided’s Hannah Filippo thinks this is the perfect opportunity for the Red Sox to land the superstar and lock him down to the richest deal in franchise history.

“Guerrero would fit in perfectly in Boston,” Filippo wrote. “He could easily bat third or fourth next to Devers and his glove would improve the infield defense. The Sox could offer Triston Casas and prospects to the Blue Jays in return, or they could use Casas in another trade to further strengthen the bullpen.

“Being aggressive in pursuing Guerrero can only help the Sox. Both sides would get what they want and be significantly closer to achieving what everyone in baseball dreams of: winning the World Series.”

Filippo also noted that part of this hypothetical situation would include immediately agreeing to an extension with Guerrero so he doesn’t become a free agent. The 25-year-old is fresh off placing sixth in American League MVP Award voting after hitting .323/.396/.544 with 30 home runs, 44 doubles, 103 RBI and 98 runs scored in 697 plate appearances.
