Sadly 10-year-old kayaker found dead in creek identified by coroner

A coroner’s probe revealed that the woman who died in 2023 while kayaking off Sentosa island had attempted to help another kayaker. Seeing that the kayaker had overturned, Ms. Chew Jia Tian, 33, went up to help him grab onto a rope that was fastened to her kayak. However, Ms. Chew was swept downstream and drowned as a result.

It was decided that her death was a terrible accident and that no foul play had occurred. On August 15, State Coroner Adam Nakhoda described her choice to save the kayaker as “an act of pure selflessness.” State Coroner Nakhoda reported that her parents had sobbed in court.

Former nurse Ms. Chew established Rough Beauty, a shop specializing in producing and offering handmade, natural bath and body products.

On October 22, 2023, she vanished from sight while kayaking with three other friends. Her body was discovered off Sentosa two days later during a search and rescue operation. The Police Coast Guard’s investigating officer, Station Inspector Muhammad Ruzaini Osman, stated on July 4, the first day of the inquiry, that Ms. Chew, Mr. Lee Kuok Ming, and Mr. Loh Kin Huat had intended to leave Sentosa on that day in October 2023 and kayak to the Southern Islands. At around 9.30 am, the group left. A fourth kayaker, Mr. Kum Chee Tong, joined the group after he noticed the other three heading toward Lazarus Island.

During the journey, Mr. Lee’s kayak overturned due to the rough waves. When she noticed this, Ms. Chew paddled over to assist Mr. Lee. August 15 statement from State Coroner Nakhoda stated: “Ms. Chew’s immediate concern was not her own welfare.” Instead, it was done to help Mr. Lee.” Ms. Chew attempted to paddle away from the floating sea barriers as Mr. Lee clutched onto a toggle rope that was fastened to her kayak. She told Mr. Lee, “Sorry, I can’t,” as her strength began to wane and her paddling speed decreased.

Then, letting go of his hold, he made his way beneath the barricades and out into the open sea, where a passing vessel saved him. Later, her empty, overturned kayak was discovered. The coroner stated that even though there was no proof of Ms. Chew’s actions after then, she must have submerged and eventually perished. Drowning was found to be the cause of death following an autopsy. It was also discovered that Ms. Chew had fractures in her ribs, however the reason was unknown. Because a portion of the crotch strap’s buckle was missing, Maritime and Port Authority investigator Cheong Kwee Thiam stated during the prior July hearing that Ms. Chew might have been using a defective personal flotation device. The day before the trip, Ms. Chew purchased the item at Decathlon. The athletic goods shop claims that the device could come loose from the user if the crotch strap is not used. The flotation apparatus was shown in court. According to Ms. Chew’s father, his daughter would have discovered the crotch strap if it hadn’t been tucked away in certain places. “My daughter is a very careful person,” he stated in court. If it took the officer so much time to recognize the (buckle) was there, I don’t expect my daughter (could have).” According to State Coroner Nakhoda, he was unable to ascertain if Ms. Chew was aware that the crotch strap existed based on the available information.

He came to the conclusion that the flotation device was not broken, and that it probably would not have fallen off if the crotch strap had been used. Ms. Chew’s father repeatedly shook his head and dabbed at his tears as he listened to the coroner. Her mother tenderly caressed the personal flotation device while holding onto it. Kayakers were urged by the coroner to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and secure their gear according to their specifications.
