Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Sidelined with Ankle Injury
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is considered week-to-week after suffering a right ankle injury during Sunday’s 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns.¹ The injury occurred in the fourth quarter when Mahomes was hit by a host of Browns defenders, causing him to hobble off the field.
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, X-rays on Mahomes’ ankle came back negative, but more testing and information will be provided on Monday. Mahomes is expected to undergo further testing to determine the severity of the injury.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid described Mahomes’ ankle as “sore” and said it will be a “day-to-day” situation.² However, reports suggest that Mahomes may have suffered a high-ankle sprain, which could keep him sidelined for an extended period.
The Chiefs have a short week ahead, facing the Houston Texans on Saturday and then traveling to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Christmas Day.³ With Mahomes’ status uncertain, backup quarterback Carson Wentz may be called upon to lead the team.
Mahomes’ injury is a significant blow to the Chiefs, who are looking to wrap up the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC. The team will likely provide an update on Mahomes’ status early this week.
