Kids ages 2, 8 and 9 hurt in crash that killed 94-year-old on Turnpike in Broward

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, all nine victims of the Florida Turnpike crash that killed a 94-year-old grandmother and hospitalized three children were from Louisiana. At approximately 2:30 p.m., the van containing the nine individuals rear-ended a petroleum tanker truck “for reasons yet to be determined”. According to a report issued on Wednesday by Florida Highway Patrol officers, it happened on Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike close to Griffin Road.

The van skid to a stop, and some people were ejected, FHP said.

Plantation Fire officials said no one in the van was wearing a seatbelt. An FHP investigator said impairment wasn’t a factor in the crash.

Air rescue also arrived on the site to evacuate a patient to Broward General Hospital, and seven people were taken from the scene in an ambulance. At the scene, the 94-year-old woman was declared deceased. Family members identified her on Wednesday as Baton Rouge native Earnestine Morris. According to family relatives, Morris leaves behind six children and eighteen grandchildren.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the survivors’ conditions were stable, although FHP did not elaborate on their potential injuries. From Chopper 6’s aerial footage, a white van with significant front end damage was visible. Beside the van, a yellow sheet covered what looked like a body. Tuesday’s incident resulted in the closure of all southbound lanes in the vicinity, and at one point, traffic was completely stopped.
