2 bodies found after boat capsized during Lake Superior fishing tournament

BARAGA COUNTY, MI — In Lake Superior, authorities found the bodies of two missing fisherman. A 21-foot boat capsized during the Keweenaw Bay Classic Fishing Tournament on June 8, prompting the search for the bodies by the U.S. Coast Guard, Michigan State Police, and the sheriff’s departments of Houghton and Baraga County.

The victims were discovered on Monday in 220 feet of water, according to the Michigan State Police, who made the announcement to WLUC-TV. Although the families have been informed, the police will not reveal identities.

Three of the five persons on board were saved by another nearby boat after the boat capsized close to Second Sand Beach. A GoFundMe page named “Give Heaven Some Fish” was established for the affected team, and more than $6,500 has been received. Many of the boats withdrew from the fishing competition in an effort to find their fellow fishermen.
