Portland man killed, 4 people injured in 3-car crash on Route 27 in Dresden

Three cars collided on Route 27 in Dresden, killing a Portland man and injuring four others. Among the four injured parties in the collision were two youngsters. Several hours were spent with the route closed.

DRESDEN, Maine — Maine authorities are identified the deceased who was killed in a multivehicle incident that shut down part of Route 27 for several hours on Labor Day. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reports that shortly after the three-car incident that occurred at approximately 2:35 p.m. on Monday near the intersection of Gardiner Road and Carriage Court in Dresden, Portland resident Andrew Coombs, 33, was declared deceased.

Investigators said a yellow, four-door 2016 Kia Rio subcompact car, which was being driven by Coombs, was traveling south on Route 27 when it crossed into the northbound lane and struck two vehicles: a black 2018 Hyundai SUV and a red 2023 Infiniti QX55 SUV.

 

The sheriff’s office said the Kia being driven by Coombs had been reported for erratic operation just before the crash happened and that deputies were heading to the area to search for the vehicle when the collision occurred.

 

Investigators said after they were struck by the Kia, the Hyundai and Infiniti vehicles rolled onto their roofs on the northbound shoulder of Route 27. The Kia came to a rest in the southbound lane.

 

The driver of the Hyundai, 41-year-old Brad Reed of Auburn, suffered internal injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland by Wiscasset Emergency Medical Services personnel.

 

The driver of the Infiniti, 43-year-old Megan Higgins of Augusta, and her two passengers, her 10- and 11-year-old children, were also transported to Maine Medical Center with internal injuries.

Following the collision, a portion of Gardiner Road close to Carriage Court was restricted to traffic until just after 6:35 p.m. on Monday. The inquiry into the crash’s cause is still ongoing. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is requesting that anybody who saw the collision or has more information get in touch with Lt.
