Earthquake shakes part of central Maine, no damage reported

Around 2:50 p.m., it occurred just outside of Gardiner, according to the US Geological Survey.

Smaller earthquakes like this one are common and usually not cause for concern, according to experts. According to USGS Research Geophysicist Thomas Pratt, “there are very few instances where a small magnitude earthquake like this is a foreshock to something much larger and damaging.” “It’s only happened twice in the Eastern U.S. in the 500-year history here, so it’s highly unlikely it’s a forerunner to something larger.”
