Sherwood High School community mourns loss of 17-year-old student killed in crash

Sandy Springs, Maryland – Sanaa Vil, 17, died on Wednesday morning after her car collided near Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane. A tiny but growing memorial now stands at the scene. The senior in high school has devastated friends.

Vil was a classmate at Sherwood High School who Caitlyn Taylor described as “beautiful, amazing, and just kind.” “She was always smiling, always happy.” Vil was driving with two other students at around eight in the morning when the car struck a light pole less than a mile from the school, according to Montgomery County Police. “While the two others are currently receiving care at the hospital, we grieve the loss of Sanaa, whose vibrant presence touched many of us in the Sherwood community,” the principal of the school wrote in a letter.People remembered Vil by leaving flowers at the crash site throughout the day and night. She was commended by school administrators for being a standout student, involved in the Black Student Union, and a player on the varsity girls’ basketball team. The community’s neighbors noticed the hazardous curve close to the incident site. Rescuers removed the car’s roof and doors using tools, a witness told FOX 5. Police in Montgomery County are currently looking into the collision. It’s unclear if slippery roads or speed played a role.
