Lake Placid woman killed in two-vehicle crash near Lake Wales Friday night

One individual lost their life in a two-vehicle crash near Lake Wales on Friday night, August 2, 2024, while Polk County Fire Rescue treated and cleared four other people at the scene. Detectives specialising in traffic homicide from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to look into the collision. Lake Placid resident Nakeyma Williams, 32, passed away there. Ms. Williams was operating a 2011 Toyota Camry that was tan.

The other car, driven by Lake Wales resident Leo Cowder, III, 51, was a gray 2022 Dodge Ram pickup truck. Stacy Cowder, 48, Gracie Cowder, 18, and two young children, ages 4 and 3, were among his passengers.

At around 8:19 p.m., deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office were called to the collision on State Road 60 West. In Lake Wales, the collision happened about four miles west of US 27. The Cowders were heading east on SR 60, while Ms. Williams was traveling west, per the early inquiry. The Toyota driven by Ms. Williams veered off the road, across the grassy median, and collided with the Cowder’s Dodge for an unknown cause. No evidence on the roads suggested that Ms. Williams tried to stop before the collision, according to the detectives. Although none of the passengers in the Dodge were wearing the required safety straps, Ms. Williams was not securely strapped in her car. After the collision, Highway State Road 60 West was closed for almost five hours. The inquiry is still on.
