Police ID 2 kayakers found dead, but an explanation for their deaths is elusive

The bodies of two men discovered dead on Friday close to two empty kayaks on the Omega Pond coast have been identified by the police. East Providence police Capt. Michael Rapoza said that the two kayakers who were found dead were Joseph Fritz, 52, of East Providence, and Gregory Boerman, 37, of Allston, Massachusetts. Family members had reported to police that the men had not returned from their kayaking trip on Thursday night. About 8:40 a.m., the men’s whereabouts were reported to the police. Drones were used in the search, and by late morning, both of the men’s kayaks and one of their bodies had been found.

The second body was discovered by searchers at 1 p.m. It is extremely uncommon for there to be two kayaking fatalities in a pond, as compared to the ocean where there are hazards like tides and currents, and in the summer when exposure dangers are much lower. Rapoza stated that as of Saturday afternoon, police detectives had no reason to suspect foul conduct.

He claimed that both bodies were discovered near the kayaks. The area along the shoreline close to Roger Williams Avenue served as the search’s main focus. The Ten Mile River feeds Omega Pond, which discharges into the Seekonk River over a dam.
