North Carolina mountains struck by 3rd earthquake in 3 days near Tennessee border

A tiny earthquake was felt in the western region of the state on Sunday near the Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina, exactly one week after two minor ones shook a portion of Surry County. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a little earthquake in Bryson City, North Carolina, occurred on Sunday afternoon.

The most recent of three minor earthquakes to occur in the same region was on Sunday. The others occurred on Thursday and Saturday, with magnitudes of 2.1 and 1.7, respectively.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the northeastern United States, extending from Boston to Baltimore, occurred just two days prior to the 2.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Sunday near Bryson City.

The epicenter of the Sunday afternoon earthquake was located in Swain County, roughly 70 miles southwest of Asheville, and 11.1 miles west-northwest of Bryson City, North Carolina. The 2.6-kilometer-deep earthquake occurred close to Fontana Lake, just like the others that have occurred in the North Carolina mountains since Thursday.
