Kayak found during search for missing man in Co Donegal but with some cautions

On Thursday, the guy in his 50s in the Machaire Gathlán area was reported missing.

While searching off the coast of County Donegal for a missing man, RESCUE personnel discovered a kayak. Around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Malin Head Coast Guard Station received a report that a man in his 50s went missing in the Machaire Gathlán region. Since then, on Friday night, the missing kayak was discovered approximately 5 kilometers north of Toraigh (Tory Island). The man, according to RTÉ, is thought to be from Donegal. He was last seen on the coast and on the island of Inis Meáin at 7:00 p.m.

When he did not come back to the pier, the local An Bun Beag unit and the Árainn Mhór lifeboat were sent in, along with the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter R118.

The search was resumed with further assistance from the Loch Swilly Coast Guard and another coast guard helicopter from Prestwick, Scotland, and continued until three in the morning on Friday. At approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, as the man’s family and friends were gathered at the pier, the kayak was discovered quite some distance away.
