Fire at Lake Mead burns 26 boats, sparks investigation – FOX5 Vegas

FOX5: LAS VEGAS, Nev. Over a week has passed since a fire at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor near Lake Mead damaged or destroyed twenty-six boats. A fire at the Lake Mead Marina damaged 26 boats and wounded 2 (fox5vegas.com). Those boat owners can now finally access their boats and personal property, but the two damaged docks are still restricted. FOX5 was given a fresh look at the I-dock damage on Monday. Much of it was burnt, with bits of wood in the water, lined with storage containers that melted in the fire. In order to prevent the debris from drifting while the fire investigation is ongoing, containment lines were also left on the river.

Investigators used submersible cameras last week. 26 boats are burned in a Lake Mead fire, prompting an investigation (fox5vegas.com). Divers have been under the water assessing the damage and debris, according to harbor owner Gail Kaiser, throughout the past three days. She does, however, state that they are unable to remove or touch anything until they have authorization from the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to Kaiser, there is currently no set schedule for when the fire investigation will be finished and repairs may start. She claims that less than a year ago, they had just completed repairing the dock due to storm damage, and they are still unsure of the full extent of the fire’s new devastation. The investigation has resulted in the closure of the damaged docks. Boat owners alone, by shuttle and appointment only, are permitted; but, according to Kaiser, the majority have already left to check on their vessels and retrieve personal items abandoned during the fire evacuations. With the exception of the I and R docks, the marina is still open. Kaiser reports that the Las Vegas Boat had a full Father’s Day weekend.
