1 dead, 2 missing after barge crashes into boat on Ohio River

Officials report that following a barge collision with a pleasure ship on the Ohio River near Louisville, Kentucky, one person is dead and two more are missing. Jason Meiman, the assistant fire chief of the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Department, told reporters on Sunday morning that the tragedy happened just after 10 p.m. on Saturday off the Greenwood boat pier at Riverview Park, and that seven individuals were on the boat.

Meiman reported that persons on the barge saved five individuals who were on the boat. With only minor wounds, the four survivors are getting well at the hospital.

One man and one woman are missing, and the boat’s occupants were all adults, according to ABC Louisville affiliate WHAS.

The Louisville Courier-Journal stated that the incident happened following a display of pyrotechnics known as Thunder Over Louisville.

The Louisville Metro Police Department spent the entire night on the river, but the darkness made it challenging to search. According to Meiman, numerous search and rescue crews are still working on the search. The accident’s cause remains unknown.
