‘This is scary’: Cherry Grove residents return home as Lee Falls Fire continues to burn nearby

As of Monday afternoon, the Lee Falls Fire, which has burnt over 300 acres close to Hagg Lake, is 50% contained.

Oregon More than ninety fires are raging in Oregon at the moment, one of which being the Lee Falls Fire in rural Washington County, close to Hagg Lake. The Cherry Grove subdivision was placed under a Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation alert late last week, but that alert has already been withdrawn. An Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman, Derek Gasperini, states that a Level 2 (Be Set) warning is still in effect for a portion of the neighborhood.

For Halle Sheldon, a resident of Cherry Grove, the past four days have been stressful. Sheldon remarked, “This is scary—I haven’t had to evacuate anywhere since I was seven or eight years old.” The fire started on Thursday morning of last week while she was traveling to work. She didn’t spend more than an hour at work before she had to leave to pack. “Today I was finally able to trailer all of my animals home,” Sheldon said. “I grabbed all of our animals and we trailered them over to a friend’s house, luckily.” After the Cherry Grove community’s evacuation order was lifted on Sunday, she was able to unwind once more. Sheldon expressed her relief at being able.
