Hurricane Helene live updates: 7 dead, millions without power …

Hurricane Helene, the biggest hurricane to ever make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region, made landfall as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Thursday night. Rescue operations are still underway, and cleanup is getting began on Saturday. Hurricane Helene’s destructive storm surge, wind, and inland floods have affected Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Millions of people are without power and dozens of people have died. Rain is still falling in places like Nashville, Paducah, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Detroit thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Helene. The general threat of flooding is minimal, and there are no new flood watches in force.

Flood warnings are still in place for several counties in western Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and western North Carolina.

Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina gave a status report on the ongoing Hurricane Helene recovery operations on Saturday afternoon. He stated that as of 4 p.m., over 200 individuals had been pulled out of the floodwaters. According to Cooper, first responders in North Carolina are receiving assistance from workers from 19 other states as well as the federal government. “This is a historic and catastrophic storm for Western North Carolina and Iā€™m grateful to first responders working right now to save lives and evacuate residents,” he stated in a statement.
