Just now: 5 Climbers died from the Matterhorn in low shoes

Two Vietnamese mountain climbers were reported missing on the Matterhorn, according to an emergency call that the Zermatt rescue team received just after 7 a.m. on Monday. Because of the severe weather, it took 14 hours to save the two. It was not possible to rescue them from the air by land because of the extreme weather. Three rescue experts from the Zermatt rescue station made the decision to hike up the Matterhorn to the accident site at 1:00 pm. The rescuers were able to be transported by Zermatt Bergbahnen to Schwarzsee, where they had to proceed on foot. They were in the elements—cold, ice, wind, and snow. The two climbers in trouble were eventually found by the rescue experts at a height of more than 3,500 meters.

Abseiling down to obstructed climbers, rescuers They were in unpassable terrain, blocked below the usual route. The climbers suffered from acute hypothermia due to their inadequate footwear, which included lightweight low shoes and thin sneakers. They could not now be evacuated out of the Matterhorn wall due to unfavorable weather. As a result, the rescue experts had to use a rope hoist to pull the injured alpinists back to the regular route after rappelling down to them.

The incredibly challenging descent to the Hörnlihütte winter camp came next. Once there, climbers in need of assistance and rescues might take refuge. Simultaneously, Air Zermatt had a chopper ready to rescue the alpinists in case of a weather window. The helicopter crew managed to rescue the rescue experts and the mountaineers in trouble in two flights after taking off toward the Matterhorn at two in the morning. According to Air Zermatt, the two Vietnamese climbers would not have been able to withstand the harsh circumstances and would have frozen to death if not for the rescuers’ heroic efforts.
