Search to resume Tuesday for 2 still missing in deadly Old Saybrook boating accident, officials say

A boat struck a breakwall near the Harbor One Marina on Labor Day, killing one person and leaving two more missing, according to state officials. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reports that 9 people were on the boat when the deadly crash occurred, all of whom were thought to be adults and friends with ties to the Old Saybrook area. The search for the two missing men continued until it was paused at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and will resume at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to DEEP officials, at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Monday, conservation officers and other first responders were notified about the capsizing boat in Old Saybrook. The boat was discovered with “significant damage,” according to DEEP; it had collided with the breakwall, or east-facing jetty, at the mouth of the Connecticut River. It was a big motorboat with a center console.

The search for the two other missing boaters was paused about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and resumed by sunrise. Six people were recovered and sent to the hospital, but one person was found dead, according to the captain. The person’s name was not disclosed on Tuesday.
