Sad news: Michigan man, 68, dies in boating crash on Houghton Lake

According to representatives of the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office, a watercraft accident on Thursday, July 4, on Houghton Lake resulted in the death of a Freeland man and the injuries of two more. On the holiday, reports of a collision involving two boats in the Long Point region of Houghton Lake prompted deputies and other emergency personnel to come to the lake.

According to a news release, CPR was already being administered to one victim when emergency personnel arrived on the site. As rescue teams arrived, more casualties started to emerge from the lake.

Following the collision, David Dark, 68, passed away from his injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. Grayling Munson Hospital treated two more patients for injuries. A second pontoon boat, carrying 12 people, was cruising west while the first, carrying four people, was moving east, according to officials from the sheriff’s office. Two vessels clashed. The department stated that there might have been another boat close to the collision that blocked the boat operators’ view. It doesn’t seem that alcohol played a role in the collision. Michigan State Police, Denton Township EMS, Markey Township Fire and EMS, Houghton Lake EMS, and Lake Township fire personnel helped the sheriff’s office on the scene.
