Ashlyn Watkins, a talented player for South Carolina basketball, was arrested over the weekend after an altercation early on Saturday morning. Her initial charges included first-degree assault and battery and kidnapping, two serious offenses that carry potential 10-year prison terms but didn’t fully explain what happened. Over the next few days, further information regarding the incident came to light, revealing crucial elements that were still missing. On Wednesday, WIS News 10’s Naomi Popa reported that Watkins’ automatic suspension following her arrest was being lifted.
The two felonies that were brought against Watkins are probably not going to stand if the suspension is being lifted. Several accounts, including this one from WIS News, state that Watkins did, in fact, restrain the victim following a fight, but she was doing so in order to prevent the alleged victim from plunging from a cliff. Watkins has consistently maintained her innocence, therefore the reports corroborate her original account. While the specifics of Watkins’ legal accusations are still unknown, the fact that her athletic and academic suspension appears to have been lifted is encouraging for both her and her South Carolina basketball team as the case gets closer to a conclusion.
