Sad Report: Broncos reveal fresh injury worry for Walsh, provide updates on recovering trio

Reece Walsh suffered a new injury during the Brisbane Broncos’ victory over the North Queensland Cowboys on the road on Saturday, the team announced.

Walsh had a fantastic game, managing 209 metres and setting up two tries as the Broncos crushed the Cowboys 42–18, almost eliminating their Queensland rivals’ hopes of making the finals. It’s now known that Walsh has a fractured finger, so the victory wasn’t without its problems. It’s unknown at this point if Walsh will miss any time following the team’s bye this weekend.

Reece has a metacarpal fracture, and the Broncos’ head of performance, David Ballard, issued a statement saying, “We will consult a specialist to determine the next steps.”

Walsh would return to the pitch with his teammates against the Parramatta Eels if he cleared the fitness test in time for Round 25, after which the Broncos would play the Dolphins and Melbourne Storm on their way home. Payne Haas and Ezra Mam both missed the weekend’s victory over the Cowboys, which preserved Brisbane’s slim hopes of making the finals, due to their recent injuries—Lisfranc and syndesmosis, respectively. The team has since stated that Mam’s season is over following surgery; Haas and Smoothy are still expected to play. Tyson Smoothy (ankle) had also been hurt while playing reserve grade in the preceding weeks. “Ezra had surgery last week, and in the upcoming days, he will begin his rehabilitation program.

Neither Payne nor Tyson needed surgery. “Tyson has started his gym rehab, but Payne will need some more testing in the coming days before we can determine when he will return.”
