Breaking news: Man found dead in Charleston Co. jail cell, SLED investigating

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office reports that a man died while in prison at the Al Cannon Detention Centre. Deputies rushed to the detention centre around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving allegations of a death. When they arrived, they discovered a man alone in his cell. According to Sheriff’s spokesperson Alexis Douglas, the individual did not respond. Deputies, medical personnel, the North Charleston Fire Department, and EMS performed life-saving measures but were unsuccessful, she stated. The individual was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Douglas stated that the man’s death appeared to be from natural causes, but the coroner’s office has yet to certify a cause of death. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called to investigate the death. The Sheriff’s Office’s Office of Professional Standards will also conduct an internal review in accordance with department practice. The Charleston County Coroner has not yet published the victim’s name.
