Jake DeBrusk leaves Bruins to sign with Canucks in free agency

Jake DeBrusk’s career with the Boston Bruins came to an end on the first day of NHL free agency. The 27-year-old winger has agreed to a seven-year contract worth $38.5 million with the Vancouver Canucks, the organisation said Monday. This is the first time DeBrusk has become an unrestricted free agent.

DeBrusk played his first seven NHL seasons with the Bruins. He scored 266 points (138 goals and 128 assists) in 465 games for the Original Six team. He scored 20 or more goals three times, and his 71 goals over the previous three seasons placed third on the team behind David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand. DeBrusk was inconsistent offensively, frequently going lengthy stretches without scoring a goal. In recent years, he has done an excellent job of developing into a more versatile player and an effective penalty taker. The Bruins already needed scoring depth, particularly on the wing, before DeBrusk left. Now that the experienced winger has left, it’s become even more vital for Boston to add a proven goal scorer.

Earlier on Monday, the Bruins signed free agency centre Elias Lindholm (seven years, $54.25 million) and defenceman Nikita Zadorov (six years, $30 million).
