On June 12, 2024, Snopes investigated a rumour that Joel Osteen, the pastor of the Houston, Texas megachurch Lakewood Church, was abandoning his ministry after being booted out of a tribute to the late country music artist Toby Keith.
The rumour started with at least one paid ad on Meta’s social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. The heading of the advertisement said, “America Says Goodbye To Joel Osteen After The Announcement Was Made Public.” The ad’s text caption said, “God had other plans for one of the most influential speakers of our time.”
However, the allegation about Osteen abandoning his ministry and event organisers forcing him out of a Keith tribute is untrue. It was simply the latest chapter in a long-running fraud involving celebrities, false promises, and CBD candy.
