FOREVER IN OUR HEART: Former Maple Leaf Sergei Berezin passes away at 52

Sergei Berezin, a former 10th round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52 on Wednesday. He was born in Voskresensk, Russia, and made his NHL debut during the 1996-97 season, scoring 25 goals and 41 points in 73 games. He went on to play another four seasons.

Berezin left Toronto to play 41 games with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001-02, before finishing the season with the Montreal Canadiens. His NHL career includes trips in Chicago, and he finished his final season with the Washington Capitals. Berezin departed the NHL and returned home to Russia to play 16 games for CSKA Moscow in 2003-04. Berezin’s game was predicated on talent, speed, attacking instincts, and a quick, precise wrist shot, and his end-to-end runs had fans on the edge of their seats. During his NHL career, he played 502 games, scored 160 times, and finished with 286 points. He would also gain an additional 30 points in 52.

After his playing days were over, Berezin remained passionate about the game. Throughout his retirement, he liked teaching minor hockey, and his off-ice interests included tennis and, most significantly, spending time with his family. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Sergei’s family, friends, and former teammates.
