Lions Have Closed a $95 million Deal With Broncos Justin Simmons, Regardless of The Unlikely…

The Detroit Lions added another cornerback to their roster: Kindle Vildor, who signed a one-year deal. However, the Lions have not yet added to their safety corps this offseason. Remarkably, Justin Simmons, one of the best safeties of the past few years, is still available.

Simons was listed as one of the possible fits Detroit might pursue in NFL free agency that are still unsigned by Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire of USA Today.

“Detroit makes a ton of sense as a landing spot if he’s still looking to ink before the draft—and he might not be,” Risdon wrote. Simmons is similarly versatile as the late C.J. Gardner-Johnson, allowing him to play any safety position. Even though his man-coverage abilities have somewhat deteriorated with age, he performs best in a split-safety role in coverage.

The only player on this list who would unquestionably start in Detroit is him, replacing Ifeatu Melifonwu or Kerby Joseph in the starting lineup. He will probably also be quite expensive.

Throughout his career, Simmons has been selected for the second team All-Pro four times, including the past three seasons. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and second team All-Pro in the same season for the first time in 2023.

Simmons recorded 70 total tackles in 2023, including 2 tackles for loss. He also had two forced fumbles, three interceptions, and eight pass defenses.

About a week after Detroit head coach Dan Campbell stated that the team would like to add more depth at safety, Risdon linked Simmons to the Lions.

At the NFL’s annual meeting last week, Campbell stated, “We’re still going to look for safety help,” as reported by Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press. That’s also not finished. Again, we are aware that we require some to create some competition in that space. Our eyes are there, then.
