Marc Marquez had a brilliant debut in the 2024 MotoGP season’s opening European race. Despite unfavorable track conditions, the #93 managed to lead the timesheets in the morning free practice on the Portimão track for the first time while racing the Desmosedici machine. Later in the day, in the final session, they secured the direct seed for Q2. Only Miller and Bastianini were in front of him.
The eight-time world champion’s best lap of the day was 1’38.210, a long way from the 1’37.2 outright lap record he set on a Honda last year. In addition, he experienced the season’s first crash—a straightforward low side with no repercussions.

The day was constructive even with the collision. We’re learning a lot from it all, and we’re doing okay. We are aware of where and why we are wasting time. T4 has never been my favorite section of the course; I’ve never been able to execute the final two right-handers flawlessly. The Ducati is more difficult to control in someone else’s slipstream, and the high traffic on the circuit contributed to the collision. Even though it was my fault, everything worked out for the best because it was just a matter of time until my first crash.
