The Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes stated that Jared Goff’s $5 million roster bonus, which is due in two weeks, is unrelated to when the team would sign a new contract with the quarterback.
“We haven’t really considered that in any of our choices,” Holmes stated at the NFL combine on Tuesday. “We’re in alignment in the direction that we want to proceed and again, like I told you before, once we have updates we’ll make sure you guys get it.”
This summer, Goff is anticipated to sign a long-term contract extension with the Lions; according to CBS analyst Boomer Esiason, the agreement may be worth $200 million to $400 million.
The Lions have stated clearly that Goff is part of their long-term plans, but Holmes would not say on Tuesday whether he wanted to re-sign any more players before the start of free agency.
Lions coach Dan Campbell remarked, “I’ve said this before, to me Jared Goff is a winning quarterback.” “With that person, you can succeed in this league, something you can’t say about many other men. You might argue that he has matured more than many of the guys we have had, but I’m still thrilled he’s here and that he’s ours. Perhaps people don’t notice it all the time, but he has, dude. It’s a tribute to him that he’s played in this league for a little while and has still improved.”
