Prior to the 2021 season, Holmes signed with the Lions, and he has been credited with rebuilding the roster. He made good selections in the draft, selecting tight end Jack Campbell (2023), tight end Sam LaPorta (2023, 34th overall), defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson (2022), receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (2021), tight end Penei Sewell (2021), and wide Jameson Williams (2022).After spending 18 years with the Los Angeles Rams, Holmes moved to the Lions, where he rose through the ranks to become director of college scouting. Having built the Lions squad to a 12-5 record and an NFC championship game, he was awarded NFL Executive of the Year for 2023.
Six days after Holmes, Campbell signed with the Lions. During his initial full-time position as head coach, Campbell’s record is 24-26-1. The former tight end, who finished 3-13-1 in his debut season, has spearheaded a noteworthy comeback.
In 2023, Campbell guided the Lions to their first-ever NFC North championship and their first-ever NFL playoff win in thirty-two years. Following the Lions’ first NFC title game participation since 1991, Campbell was selected as an Associated Press Coach of the Year Finalist.
