Henderson, Nevada There will be tension in Christian McCaffrey’s first Super Bowl experience, starting around 67 hours before the game begins.
Thanks to a 2023 season in which he led the NFL in touches, scrimmage yards, and scrimmage touchdowns and recorded a career-high 1,459 rushing yards, he is a candidate for the best honor in the land—the AP NFL Most Valuable Player. At NFL Honors on Thursday night, he will find out if the voters thought he was deserving.
It’s hard to predict at this time whether McCaffrey will defeat Lamar Jackson or the rest of the field for MVP, but he already knows which piece of hardware matters more to him: the Lombardi Trophy.

However, McCaffrey is aware that quarterbacks are disproportionately the winners of MVP awards. More often than not, though, a running back has to ride their luck to unseat the best passers in the league.
“To be an MVP as a running back, I think you gotta rush for, you gotta have 2,000 yards or 1,000-1,000 (rushing and receiving yards), maybe, and a bunch of touchdowns,” he stated. “And I think to be MVP, you gotta have quarterbacks that have some down years.”
It appeared that 2023 would be a disappointing year for the quarterback. Until Jackson put together an amazing run of performances in the last month of the competition, none of the contenders had distinguished themselves.
