Alwyn Davey Jr., a small forward for Essendon, has shared his “big reflection” after a successful 2023 debut season.

The 19-year-old, who was selected by Essendon in the third round of the 2022 National Draft, is the son of 100-game Bomber Alwyn Davey Sr. He participated in ten AFL games in his rookie campaign.

Though bigger bodies occasionally took advantage of his wiry stature, the Oakleigh Chargers alumnus displayed intriguing flashes of his ground-level talent and natural goal sense.

Therefore, strengthening his physicality was a major area of improvement for Davey Jr. this preseason as he gets ready to play in his second AFL season with an upgraded Essendon forward line.

Even though Davey Jr. finds playing small forward to be nearly second nature, he stated that he would like to try out different positions this year in order to increase his chances of getting senior playing time under the direction of second-year coach Brad Scott.

“I want to play as many positions as I can, especially if it gives me more opportunities to play in the AFL side,” he stated.

“When I haven’t had the opportunity to play seniors, I’ve been pleased with what they’ve done with me in the VFL. I’ll continue to strive for flexibility.”
